What is Harness?

Harness is a program under Men & Co. Services - a subsidiary of The Centre for Women & Co., the regional domestic and family violence support service across Logan and the Redlands.

Harness is a non-crisis early domestic violence perpetration and victimisation prevention service. Our focus is on promoting healthy personal, relationship, and family wellbeing whilst at the same time challenging domestic violence thoughts, attitudes and behaviours that threaten this wellbeing. We are not here to make assumptions or cast judgment, but rather create space for you to harness your best and safest self.

We are proactive in coming to workers to provide a safe space to make sure they are supported in getting started on being the best versions of themselves in life and relationships while fostering their ability to live meaningful and fulfilling lives. Harness does this through providing:

  • Information about DFV, gendered abuse and other issues affecting workers and families.

  • Awareness about how choices impact personal and family wellbeing.

  • Education about where can I get help and what is available.

  • Brief intervention, advice & referral.

Harness is for any sites or people living, working or undertaking training across some Brisbane Inner City Suburbs, Brisbane South, Redland Bay, Logan and Gold Coast. Click here to see our catchment suburbs.

Toolbox Talks

In-person group discussions providing information about how our choices impact ours and other’s lives and how to support ourselves and others to be safe and healthy in our lives and relationships.

Brief Intervention

One-on-one support option for information and referral for issues affecting people’s lives and where and how to get the right help. This includes any concerns about relationships or domestic and family violence (perpetration or victimisation/survival).

Resources

A mix of psychoeducational and referral information so that people know how to spot the signs that things aren’t okay personally and in relationships, and what to do once you know.

Brief Intervention is an in-person, phone, text or email support option. Brief intervention is all about making sure you have the right information or advice to manage concerns in life, relationships, domestic and family violence (perpetration or survival), and/or referral for any other issue affecting you or a loved one.

Brief Intervention is not counselling. Instead, it offers a space to better understand your situation, strengths, areas for growth, and how to start moving forward. Brief Intervention does this over five one hour sessions.

When to contact us:

Current/Past Relationship Issues – managing anger in relationships, communication problems, setting or maintaining boundaries, understanding your partners perspective, supporting your partner, parenting, co-parenting, relationship breakdown, etc.

Aim of Toolbox Talks:

Toolbox Talks are group discussions aimed at ending domestic and family violence attitudes, beliefs and behaviours.

Toolbox Talks support construction workers and apprentices to:

  • be accountable for their happiness in their lives and relationships

  • feel they can cope with problems that come up

  • feel greater choice over behaviour that serves them and their partners/families

  • spot and challenge domestic violence behaviours and attitudes or beliefs supportive of this, either in themselves or others, for a safer and healthier construction industry.

The talks are designed to provide the most benefit and impact when all are viewed together in order, however they still provide benefit and impact when viewed on their own.

If your site is out of our catchment areas, scroll down to the bottom of the page to learn more about how we can visit your workers. Additionally, if these times or talks don’t fit your schedules, contact a Harness worker now for flexible options.

FAQs

Does Harness offer counselling?

No, Harness does not offer counselling. Harness offers a specialist one on one space (Brief Intervention) to help you better understand the problem, plan how to tackle it, what things you’ve got in your corner, what else you might need and who else can help you. All so you can start taking more confident steps towards a beneficial resolution for the problem/your goals.

Do you offer couples counselling?

No. Harness provides a space to talk with people one on one to process what they want, what they need to work on and how to get there. This can involve us linking you with services such as couples counselling if that suits you and your partners needs.

Is Harness about mental health?

Whilst Harness does not focus on suicide prevention or extreme mental health, we do offer brief support for people struggling to cope day to day with their thoughts, feelings or circumstances and to get a start in managing these and be their best selves. However, we do not offer counselling. For more information about our brief intervention service, scroll up to the Brief Intervention section.

What’s the difference between Mates in Construction and Harness?

MATES focus on preventing suicide in the construction, mining and energy sectors, and supporting workers and their families with advice, information and support to tackle a range of severe mental health concerns.

Harness focuses on preventing domestic violence perpetration and victimisation in the construction industry by supporting people in their lives and relationships to know how to tackle problems both before and after they come up. For more information about what Harness can do, go back to the top of this webpage.

Is Harness for family members or friends of construction workers?

No, but there are a number of other services in the community that exist to support people. And whilst we can’t work directly with people who don’t work in construction, we can directly help guide construction workers to find the right services and get the right support for their loved ones.

How much does it cost?

Nothing 😊. Harness is a free service fully funded by Construction Skills Queensland.

Does Harness only give support for Men?

Harness supports men, women and non-binary persons to harness their best selves.

Does Harness support young people?

Harness offer our brief intervention support for any construction workers/apprentices aged 18 and over. Our toolbox talks, however, are for any age group in the construction industry.

Where do you offer Harness?

Harness is for any people in construction working OR living OR undertaking training in our catchment area, which covers some Brisbane Inner City Suburbs, Brisbane South, Logan, Redland Bay or Gold Coast areas.

Outside of Catchment?

No worries! If your company wants to invest in wellbeing and safety, we can offer customised quotes to deliver our services outside of our catchment area. This can also include our brief intervention service and tailored resources to your area. This can be Queensland or interstate.
